The Story of The Three BrothersExcerpts of a Letter by The Previous Rebbe, Referring To Our Story

Here, the available portion of the manuscript ends, leaving us in the middle of the Baal Shem Tov's teaching. Thus we do not have the conclusions to the many stories that were begun in this letter:

  • Did the misnaged brother recover, and did he eventually become a chossid?

  • Did Reb Avraham Shaul Palatnik remain a follower of the maggid, or did he abandon him because he was a disciple of the Baal Shem Tov?

  • How did the maggid's followers resolve their conflict with Sholom Ivansker's two oldest sons-in-law and the other opponents of the maggid, concerning the late hour at which the maggid davened Shacharis?

  • What finally happened with Reb Chayim Porush? When did he go to visit the Baal Shem Tov, and how did he come to live in Kalisk?

  • Did Reb Mordechai eventually leave Dubravna and travel to Lubavitch to find the third companion, Reb Yissachar Ber? Although we know nothing more about Reb Mordechai's relationship with Reb Yissachar Ber, we do know how Reb Yissachar Ber came to visit the Baal Shem Tov, and what became of him afterward; (see Appendix B).

  • Did Reb Simcha Zissel go to Liozna and become a chossid of the Alter Rebbe?

  • What was the "incident that occurred in Liozna at a chassidic farbrengen led by Reb Shmuel Munkes," and what was the story of Reb Mordechai Horodoker?

There is no need to despair: very soon, we will merit the coming of Moshiach. Perhaps we will then be found worthy of receiving the remainder of the manuscript, to be published and (G-d willing) translated.
