B"H, 21 Menachem Av, 5710

Greetings and blessings,

In reply to your letter of 15 Menachem Av regarding the health of your wife: Your statements that she cannot become pregnant for particular reasons are not understandable since you write in the beginning of your letter that in Elul, 5709, she had been pregnant. If so, it is surely possible at present as well.

Therefore, it appears to me that you should not perform acts that are, as you mention, dreadful. [Instead, your wife] should consult again with a doctor: a specialist who will tell her what to do. He will certainly suggest mild measures, [using] this particular doctor or this particular drug, that will enable the objective to be achieved and [lead to the] fulfillment of the blessing of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, hk"m, that G-d gladden your hearts with viable offspring.

You write that your wife has become nervous from all the above.

Communicate to her that G-d controls the world in the best way possible. He knows what is best and He wrote in His Torah that children are a blessing. As such, they are due a Jew. If, at times, this blessing is concealed, [i.e., has not yet come to fruition], we must know that we have a great Rebbe, my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, hk"m, and he will ultimately bring about the fulfillment of all his blessings for all those who are bonded with him.

We must, nonetheless, uphold our bond with him. If someone ponders over whether his blessing will be fulfilled and becomes nervous about this, this is a sign of weakness in one's trust and one's connection. In particular, if this affects one's health, this is certainly a sign that this is one of the crafts of the yetzer hara.

She and you yourself must be strong in your trust in G-d and in [the one who serves as] Moshe, His servant,[746] in our generation, my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, hk"m. This itself helps draw down his blessing sooner for viable offspring and all forms of good.

Certainly, your wife gives tzedakah to the charity of Rabbi Meir Baal HaNes before lighting candles on Friday, and every day you recite the Rebbe's kapitle which is presently kapitle 71.

When, in a good and auspicious time, your wife becomes pregnant, it can be assumed that she will not publicize the matter initially. She should, however, immediately communicate the matter to the Rebbe at his gravesite.

Signing with blessing,

Menachem Schneerson
