No. 679

This letter was sent to R. Saadia Liberov.
B"H, 18 Menachem Av, 5710

Greetings and blessings,

In response to your letter of 7 Menachem Av, I was happy to hear that the task of nifneh[712] is proceeding in a desirable manner as before. Certainly, based on the statements of [Tanya,] Iggeres HaKodesh, Epistle 14, that every day, a new and higher light that had never shined before is drawn down, [our efforts must also continually advance]. (It is understood that this does not apply only on Rosh HaShanah, but every day.)[713] [This also applies to] nifneh, which represents the connection to "the Tree of Life," with one's entire naran chay,[714] body, and animal soul, as can be understood from what is stated in Tanya and in Iggeres HaKodesh regarding the positive quality of tzedakah which is referred to[715] as "the mitzvah" without any further description. Certainly you will apply yourself to this in a manner that will not only be as good as before, but will proceed and improve, adding higher qualities.

I received the list [of contributors] for nifneh from Tammuz. The receipts that you requested were certainly sent to you.

The lists [of contributors] to Merkos [L'Inyonei Chinuch] and Machne Israel[716] have not yet been received. Similarly, the authorization from R. Benyamin Gorodetzky on the practical matter[717] is still lacking.

Signing with regards to our entire fellowship, with blessings for success in the holy work of connecting the members of our chassidic brotherhood to their Nasi, my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, hk"m, both materially and spiritually, awaiting good news,

Menachem Schneerson

Notes:

  1. (Back to text) [The term nifneh was a chassidic code to refer to maamad, the money given by chassidim to the Rebbe to use according to his discretion. Nifneh is made up of the letters that follow those of the word maamad; i.e., the nun follows the mem, the peh, the ayin....]

  2. (Back to text) [In Tanya, the Alter Rebbe only mentions Rosh HaShanah. Nevertheless, the same concepts apply not only to Rosh HaShanah, but to every day.]

  3. (Back to text) [These terms are acronyms for the words nefesh, ruach, and neshamah;and chayah and yechidah, the terms used to refer to the five different levels of the soul.]

  4. (Back to text) [Repeatedly in the Talmud Yerushalmi.]

  5. (Back to text) [As mentioned in Letter No. 633 above.]

  6. (Back to text) [It appears that the Rebbe is referring to Rav Saadia's moving to North Africa (see Letter No. 659) and taking part in the educational activities there that were under the direction of R. Benyamin.]
