No. 512

This letter was addressed to R. Chanoch Hendel Havlin, one of the members of the Lubavitch community in Jerusalem.
B"H, 3 Menachem Av, 5709

Greetings and blessings,

I acknowledge receipt of your letters of 30 Sivan and 22 Tammuz. In response to them:

  1. It is very surprising that, as of yet, you have not received the texts that were sent to you a long time ago. Perhaps it is advisable to investigate in the local post office....[579]

  2. No doubt, the practices of the yahrzeit of my revered father[580] will be observed as required by law, according to the particulars that I mentioned last year in my letter of 25 Menachem Av, 5708.[581] Please advise me of this.

  3. There were [members of] the Hungarian community who just published portions of the Sdei Chemed, as [that text] had been printed previously. We have now begun preparations for publishing a new edition with several improvements. To produce a complete text, we are looking for an example of the handwriting of HaChacham Medini[582] (not necessarily from the Sdei Chemed itself), several pages containing at least some particulars of his biography in addition to those printed in the Sdei Chemed, a picture (besides that printed in Otzar Yisrael), and the like. No doubt you will be able to help me in this, because toward the end of his life, HaChacham Medini made aliyah to our Holy Land. I thank you in advance [for your efforts]. The matter is pressing because of several factors here. As is understood, I will cover your expenses as is the practice in such matters. I await good tidings.

  4. Enclosed is a letter of general concern from Machne Israel in addition to the letter concerning the book of pictures.

With wishes for everlasting good in all matters and with greetings to all those who seek our welfare,

Rabbi Menachem Schneerson

No doubt you have already received Vol. 11 of Kovetz [Lubavitch] and the Kehot catalogue.

Notes:

  1. (Back to text) [A portion of the letter was not released for public knowledge.]

  2. (Back to text) [The revered kabbalist, R. Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, who passed away on 20 Av.]

  3. (Back to text) [The Rebbe’s Igros Kodesh, Vol. II, Letter No. 388.]

  4. (Back to text) [Rabbi Chayim Chizkiyahu Medini, the author of the Sdei Chemed.]
