No. 498

This letter was addressed to R. Chanoch Hendel Havlin, one of the members of the Lubavitch community in Jerusalem.
B"H, 4 Tammuz, 5709

Greetings and blessings,

Your letters from 3, 6, and 17 Iyar and Rosh Chodesh Sivan have been received. In response to them:

  1. My letter with the kuntreis for the Shavuos holiday no doubt reached you in the interim. Similarly, we have already sent you our publications that you ordered. You will no doubt acknowledge receipt of them. Also, [a copy of] Sefer HaNiggunim for Mr. Geshuri was sent in the package for you.

  2. When [Mr. Geshuri] prints [an article] concerning Sefer HaNiggunim as he promised, you will no doubt send us a clipping.

  3. The [chapters of] Mishnayos that begin with the letters of the name of the departed which are studied on a yahrzeit[454] may be studied through the 24-hour period. In contrast, ch. 24 of tractate Keilim and ch. 7 of tractate Mikvaos[455] are completed after each of the three daily services.

  4. Kiddush should be recited while standing. See p. 9 of my Haggadah.[456]

  5. What will ultimately be regarding the notes to the Tanya?[457]...[458]

  6. Enclosed is the kuntreis for the Holiday of Redemption [Yud-Beis/Yud-Gimmel Tammuz][459] to be shared with people at large. Also enclosed is a letter from Machne Israel.[460] You will no doubt do what is necessary [regarding it] in an appropriate manner.

  7. Enclosed is a clipping concerning the visit of the Chief Rabbi [of Eretz Yisrael][461] here. In my humble opinion, it is desirable that it should be publicized in the newspapers there. Similarly, arrangements should be made for him to speak in public about his visit [and what he saw regarding] the activities of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita. This should be sufficient for a person of understanding.

With wishes for all types of everlasting good and with greetings to all those who seek our welfare,

Rabbi Menachem Schneerson

Enclosed is a letter from the Committee for Maamad. Concerning this, encouragement on my part to a person such as yourself is surely unnecessary.

Notes:

  1. (Back to text) [As stated in Sefer HaMaamarim 5709, p. 74, it is customary, on a person’s yahrzeit, to study a chapter of Mishnayos that begins with every letter of the person’s name. See also Letter No. 455.]

  2. (Back to text) [Which are customarily studied to elevate the soul of the departed.]

  3. (Back to text) [P. 8 in the present printing.]

  4. (Back to text) [See Letter No. 416 and the other letters mentioned there.]

  5. (Back to text) [Certain portions of the Rebbe’s letter were not released for public knowledge.]

  6. (Back to text) [I.e., Yud-Beis/Yud-Gimmel Tammuz, the anniversary of the Previous Rebbe’s release from prison. See Sefer HaMaamarim 5709, p. 183ff.]

  7. (Back to text) [The letter, reproduced in the Rebbe’s Igros Kodesh, Vol. III, p. 130, speaks of preparing a book of pictures of Lubavitcher chassidim and their families all over the world to be given to the Previous Rebbe.]

  8. (Back to text) [Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Herzog.]
