No. 473

This letter was addressed to R. Yaakov Landau, the Chief Rabbi of Bnei Brak.
B"H, 5 Nissan, 5709

Greetings and blessings,

With great thanks I am acknowledging receipt of your two letters and the copy of the conclusion of the Rebbe Rashab’s letter concerning Lashon HaKodesh,[318] a copy of the letter dated 29 Tammuz,[319] 4 Menachem Av, 6 Menachem Av, 5677, a digest from Rosh Chodesh Nissan [without mention of the year], and from 18 Shvat, 5679.

I thank you for [these] past [efforts] and sincerely request that, in the future, you continue to copy similar words of great esteem. Obviously, all of the costs involved (hiring a copyist and the like) will be borne by me according to your directives.

I offer heartfelt personal thanks for the copy of the letter of 29 Tammuz, for it appears to have been written to my revered father. This is particularly [significant] because my revered mother was unable to bring any of my revered father’s books or writings here with her.

I am in the process of printing an index of the Rebbe Rashab’s maamarim. When [the Rebbe Rashab] did not deliver a new maamar, but instead merely repeated a maamar that had been delivered previously, there are no manuscripts of that maamar written by [the Rebbe Rashab] personally. [Instead,] I am seeking [such copies] among the collection of manuscripts and records of the members of the chassidic brotherhood and the yeshivah students. Perhaps there are maamarim that you heard or know about that are not recorded in the enclosed proofs of the index?

I saw your letter to my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, but I did not find within it what I think is of primary importance: the names of people in our Holy Land who will transform the potential into actual deed [and apply] the decisions made to change the approach to [the study of] Chassidus there. For several resolutions have been accepted and committees have been selected, yet because of the obstacles located there — whose nature I am sure are known to you more thoroughly than to me — they have not yet been acted upon. Further elaboration to persons like yourself who are present there is not necessary.

Enclosed is a kuntreis for Beis Nissan. Please acknowledge receipt of it. I conclude with wishes for a happy and kosher Pesach for you and your entire household,

Rabbi Menachem Schneerson
