No. 280

This letter was addressed to Rabbi Yaakov Katz, one of the initial supporters of Lubavitch activities in America.
B"H, 12 Menachem Av, 5707

Greetings and blessings,

You are certainly aware that I had been in Europe for several months and that I recently returned together with my revered mother. Upon my return I found on my desk the notes of the talks of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, from Tishrei, 5707, which you returned. With great thanks.

Ordinarily, I would conclude my letter with this. However, the situation of Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch compels me to write the following:

Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch finds itself in a very strained financial situation. In addition, there are further expenses associated with our growing activities in Europe ([involving both] education and publication) despite the fact that we are very careful regarding these costs. This compels Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch to turn to all of its friends and ask them to immediately pay all their previous pledges and vows and to make new promises for the future, [extending themselves] to their full capacity, and even beyond their capacity.

[Since] we consider you one of the closest friends of Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch, we turn to you with the above request. I am certain that it will evoke from you an appropriate response both with regard to doing what you can yourself and seeing to it that all those whom you can influence will also do so.

I know that you have different arguments to explain why you can postpone the matter. I would like to conclude with a statement of our Sages concerning the days which just recently passed.

Our Sages state (Bava Metzia 30b): "Jerusalem was destroyed solely because [the people] conducted their judgments according to the Torah's laws," [i.e., they did not push themselves beyond the measure of the law. One may infer that] by conducting oneself beyond the measure of the law (i.e., even though it appears to one that according to law, one is not obligated at the present time), one brings closer the redemption and the building of Jerusalem.

With the blessing "Immediately to teshuvah, immediately to Redemption,"

Rabbi Menachem Schneerson
