No. 218

The letter was addressed to R. Moshe Gurary, one of the leading members of the Lubavitch community in Eretz Yisrael.
{Adar, 5706}

Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter from Rosh Chodesh II Adar. From the depths of my heart, I thank you for sending the packages to my esteemed mother.

With regard to sending the texts that are printed here to your community: We are prepared to send [texts] as you requested, but with the expressed condition that we receive payment for them. For the lack of means here is very great and it prevents the publication of many projects. Not only have the chassidim in Eretz Yisrael not participated in the publication of any texts of Chassidus, they have not even paid for the texts that we have sent them for several years. (From Jerusalem, we hear complaints that the texts are distributed without charge in Tel Aviv [and they wonder] why they are forbidden to do so.)

In practice, relying on your letter and your responsibility, I directed that shipments of texts to you be renewed as before, based on the above condition. The price of all the texts can be found on the last page of all of our publications.

From the funds that are owed us, please give my brother[373] 50 Israeli liras, and the remainder, after deducting what is due yourself, give to the fund of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita. Please advise me of the final amount.

For a long time, I have been seeking someone in your community who possesses notes composed by R. Shmuel Gronem Esterman and others like him on the Tanya.[374] As of yet, I have not been able to clarify the matter.

How much would you[375] contribute to the printing of the series of maamarim [entitled BeShaah SheHikdimu,] 5672?[376] Are you prepared to participate in the printing of Likkutei Torah, Toras Chayim, and Torah Or? How much [are you prepared to give] and under which conditions?

At the outset, I offer thanks if you could reply to all the above as soon as possible. With the blessing: "Immediately to teshuvah; immediately to Redemption,"

  3. (Back to text) [The letter uses a plural Hebrew conjugation, either as a title of respect to R. Moshe Gurary or because the request is not directed solely to him, but to other members of the chassidic brotherhood in Tel Aviv.]
