No. 100

The following letter was composed with the intent that it serve as the basis for a letter to be composed in English that would encourage parents to send their children to the Beis Rivkah and Beis Sarah schools that were established through the efforts of Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch.
[5702-3]
Our Sages relate (Shmos Rabbah, ch. 28) that when the Holy One, blessed be He, desired to give the Torah, He told Moshe: "Speak to the women first - they are eager in their observance of the mitzvos - so that they will bring their children to the Torah."

Indeed, we see that the appropriate education that [the women in Egypt granted their children,] the generation who received the Torah, [produced results]: When gold was collected for the Golden Calf, the women refused to participate in any way or form. And yet, when shortly afterwards the Jewish people made donations to the Sanctuary, the women were the first to give for the Sanctuary's construction.

Parents! Fathers and mothers!

King Shlomo, the wisest of all men, said (Mishlei 14:1): "The wise among women builds her home, but a foolish one tears it down with her own hands."

Every daughter and girl will, when she grows up, build a home in Israel, and the existence - or, heaven forbid, the destruction - of that household will be dependent on her.

The preparation she receives to fulfill this most important mission depends on you, the parents. You bear the responsibility for the future of your daughter and the future of the household which she will build.

To help you give your daughter the education she needs to find her path - a straight path - that will lead to a life of satisfaction in both spiritual and material matters;

To provide for your daughter and your granddaughter ... all the information necessary for her to fulfill her mission;

To enable her to stand on the foundations of the Ani Maamin[1] of the entire Jewish people;

To impress upon her the seal of a Jewish daughter who is bound to her faith, her Torah, and the tradition of her ancestors;

For these purposes, Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch founded the Beis Rivkah and Beis Sarah schools.

Parents! See that your daughter visits the Beis Rivkah or Beis Sarah school in your neighborhood.

Men and women! Help Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch in its work, its mission of establishing and expanding its network of schools. Then we can be certain that - with G-d's help - the students of these schools will be those who build a young generation, a generation which is both materially and spiritually healthy, a generation in which the Jewish nation will take pride.

With blessing and with respect,

The Chairman of the Executive Committee

Notes:

  1. (Back to text) [Ani Maamin means "I believe." In this context it refers to the condensed version of the Rambam's Thirteen Principles of Faith which begin with the Hebrew words Ani Maamin that are recited every day after the morning prayers in many non-Lubavitch communities.]
